Metabolism researcher wins an ERC grant worth 1.5 million

The European Research Council has granted an ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant to Academy Research Fellow Ville Hietakangas from the Institute of Biotechnology. The five-year grant totals approximately EUR 1.5 million. Ville Hietakangas is delighted as the grant allows for goal-orientated work in the long term.

– This type of funding is extremely important to a recently established team of researchers. It enables us to fully focus on the issues that I think are essential in our field, he says.

With his team, Hietakangas studies the messages that the organism of a fruit fly sends about its nutritional status. Among other things, the team has discovered a genetic mutation in a fly that severely disturbs glucose metabolism. The reason for the metabolic imbalance remains partly unclear, which makes this mutation and its exceptional glucose metabolism an interesting discovery in terms of further research.

The team is interested in communication within organisms: how does an organism use the information it collects to control metabolism?

The project that was awarded the funding focuses on detecting glucose and the related gene regulation. The goal is to find new gene regulators that contribute to glucose metabolism.

Metabolic diseases are increasing

Fruit flies have been used for research in experimental biology for more than a hundred years. They are also suitable for metabolism research. The fruit fly is an excellent model system, because its genes can be switched on and off in any specific tissue. It also enables broad genetic screens as raising flies is relatively inexpensive and fast.

Although people and fruit flies differ in appearance, their metabolic systems and many other cell-level functions have remained quite similar throughout evolution.

– Our work involves basic research in biology, but the results may benefit the development of treatments for diabetes and other metabolic diseases in the long run, says Hietakangas.

Metabolism research is growing in significance, because morbid obesity and related metabolic diseases are becoming more common around the world.

Through its Starting Independent Researcher Grants, the European Research Council supports young researchers who are in the process of establishing a research team or finding stability for a project that has been running for a few years. Hietakangas is the third recipient of an ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant at the University of Helsinki this autumn.

Parasitic disease researcher wins a coveted ERC Starting Grant worth EUR 1.5 million

The European Research Council has awarded an ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant to Anna-Liisa Laine, who works as a group leader at the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Metapopulation Research. The five-year grant totals EUR 1.5 million. Academy Research Fellow Anna-Liisa Laine and her team study the complex relationship between the ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata and the powdery mildew Podosphaera plantaginis in the meadows of the Åland Islands. The powdery mildew infects the ribwort plantain, sucking nutrients from its cells. The two form a natural model system that explains the behaviour of plant diseases on a wider scale. The research results shed light on the reasons behind plant diseases and the variation in their infection ability.

A unique database

In her research, Laine exploits the same network of meadows that Academy Professor Ilkka Hanski used in his famous metapopulation studies on the Glanville Fritillary. The ribwort plantain, which is the only host plant for the powdery mildew, is also the primary food plant for the caterpillars of the Glanville Fritillary.

The 4,000-plus known ribwort plantain populations in the Åland Islands have now been examined for occurrences of the powdery mildew. Accumulated over a period of ten years, this data constitutes a unique database, even globally.

The Åland Islands offer an opportunity to study the evolutionary processes of diseases in natural conditions. The results from laboratory studies in Viikki during the winter are tested in the field during the growth season.

Farming is likely to benefit from the results

In the long term, farming in particular may benefit from the research into the factors affecting the evolution of diseases. The research project has produced models for predicting the occurrence of diseases. These models can be adapted to measure economically significant plant diseases.

– Chemical pesticide sprayings are partly random, because the real disease risks remain unknown. Reliable predictions of the time and place of disease risks would enable a considerable decrease in pesticide use, says Laine.

Laine and her team are also developing methods that make it easier to study parasitic fungi. Successful cryo freezing, for example, keeps the spores viable for a long time.

Last spring, the researchers in the project examined overwintered powdered mildew for the first time. The purpose was to identify the factors affecting the wintering of mildew. This information may shed new light on the wintering of disease populations in general as to date this has not been studied much.

– Winter ecology is regulated by entirely different factors than successful growth seasons, Laine says.

UCL: Ark Therapeutics Group led consortium wins €5.3M EU grant

9/3/2011

Ark Therapeutics Group plc is pleased to announce it has received notice of the award of a €5.3 million EU Framework Programme 7 Grant to a consortium led by Ark including two other SMEs and elements of the Yale-UCL Research Collaborative (Division of Medicine in UCL, and Departments of Cardiology in Yale and Queen Mary College London) and the University of Eastern Finland.

The Grant supports the consortium’s involvement in a research programme to translate cutting edge biotechnology in the coronary stent area over four years. The Grant is subject to the formal process of contract negotiation with the European Commission (“EC”) which is anticipated to reach conclusion in September. Ark’s successful grant application was chosen from more than 40 applications across Europe and received an overall score of 13.5 out of a possible 15 from the EC's independent scientific report on the project’s technology.

The Grant will fund research that combines the technologies of the participants:

1)      Ark's technology and expertise concerning adenoviral-delivered gene therapeutics, which will be delivered to the coronary artery after heart attack to restore the integrity of the artery; and

2)      Use of a pro-healing and/or regenerative stent (in collaboration with Magnus Inventions and QualiMed, a German company which will make the stent).

The objective of the project will be to stimulate a healing process such that over time the stent will undergo a predictable degradation to leave a wholly biologically healed artery through regeneration of native tissues. The research programme is scheduled to commence in November this year and Ark will receive €1.1 million for its contribution to the project.

Martyn Williams, Chief Executive of Ark commented: “The award to Ark of this significant EU grant further demonstrates the Company’s innovative science capabilities and validates the approach of gene therapy and stem cell therapy in the cardiovascular system. We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with so many respected institutions and look forward to contributing to such an important disease area.”

Professor John Martin, Chief Scientific Officer at Ark commented: “Grants, such as the EU Framework Grant announced today, provide much needed resources to carry out important research into areas where there is significant unmet need. We hope that this research will offer new hope to sufferers of heart disease, a condition that affects more than 50% of the population during their lifetime.”
