The application period for the grants and scholarships is from November 29th to December 17th 2010. The application period ends at 14.45 hours (2:45 p.m.).
NB: The Grants and scholarships open for applications web site will be updated by the begining of the application time.
The deadline for recommendations is December 21st 2010 at 14.45 hours (2:45 p.m.). The applicant gives the contact information for the reference on the application. The reference gets instructions for giving the recommendation through e-mail once the applicant has registered the application.
All applications and recommendations are registered using an electronic application system.
All applicants will be informed about the awarded grants and scholarships in February 2011. The grants and scholarships will be presented in spring 2011.

A post-doctoral position is available at the research group of Peppi Koivunen-Karppinen at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Oulu, Finland. The group is interested in basic mechanistic and translational research focusing on the hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) hydroxylases in physiology and cancer. JUNIOR INVESTIGATOR POSITION AT BIOCENTER OULU, FINLAND The bioinstitute Biocenter Oulu is the spearhead organization of biosciences and molecular medicine in the Biosciences and Health focus area of the University of Oulu, Finland. Its project groups work in several departments within the Faculties of Science and Medicine at the University of Oulu. Currently there are ten principal projects and one junior investigator's project with about 30 senior scientists, 60 post-doctoral fellows and 140 Ph.D. students. The organization has a highly collaborative culture and is committed to promoting high quality interdisciplinary research. External evaluators have found the research at Biocenter Oulu to be of high international standard. A great effort has been made to develop core facilities, which offer services varying from structural biology to transgenic animals. Biocenter Oulu also promotes continuing education through its Doctoral Program, by arranging advanced courses, research seminars and symposia. Biocenter Oulu is searching for a Junior Investigator wishing to establish an independent career after successful post-doctoral training. Description of the Position We are particularly interested in candidates carrying out research into Cell-Matrix Biology, Cardiovascular Biology, Cell Biology, Protein Sciences, Functional Genomics and Molecular Genetics. Successful candidates will be appointed to the Biocenter Oulu organization and will work in the Biocenter Oulu facility or in an appropriate department at one of the faculties. Biocenter Oulu will provide the salary of the principal investigator and one group member and an annual grant for materials and consumables. Qualifications and Experience Qualifications should include post-doctoral experience, preferably international, and an excellent research record. Eligible junior investigator must have been awarded his/her first PhD up to 6 years prior to the publication date of this call. Eligible career breaks are maternity or paternity leaves (with proof of accumulation of actual time off for children born after the PhD award), and leave taken for national service. Ophthalmology study group is part of the SILK organization. Research and Development Center for Ophthalmic Innovations (SILK) aim to establish a comprehensive network of institutes and companies doing eye and vision research. The main goal of SILK is to produce new ophthalmic innovations and adapt them to patient use. Ophthalmology study group is collaborating for example with Ophthalmology group of Regea Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Department of Biomedical engineering at Tampere University of Technology. Main focus of this collaboration is on translational studies performed with hESC differentiated retinal pigment epithelial cells.
Selected candidate will work with in vitro cell culture models and translational studies developed for retinal diseases. A successful candidate must have a PhD in cell biology, molecular biology or biochemistry/biotechnology or equivalent and strong experience in cell culturing and animal work. At first, funding is available for one year. The salary is based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish Universities.
