One position in Redoxregulation of autoimmune inflammation and one position in Immunespecific vaccination strategies using animal models. Both positions will be placed at the Division of Medical Inflammation Research (see http://www.inflam.mbb.ki.se) Area of responsibilities/duties: 1) Post doctoral position in Redoxregulation of autoimmune inflammation. A post doctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in experimental immunology and inflammation models. The project will focus on the role of antigen-presenting cells regulating T cell immunity through oxidative burst will be investigated. The Ncf1 gene has been positional cloned to be a major gene regulating autoimmune arthritis and we have found the gene regulate both macrophage and T cell reactivity. To sort out the underlying mechanisms operating in vivo we have made new mouse strains conditionally expressing the Ncf1 gene. The project will use these strains to study the role of Ncf1 in different antigen-presenting cells. 2) Post doctoral position in Immunespecific vaccination strategies using animal models. A post doctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in cellular immunology and experimental animal work. The project will focus on immune tolerance in experimental animal models. In the MIR lab we have developed new strategies for therapeutic vaccination leading to protection against arthritis. It is based on the discovery of critical posttranslationally modified peptides. The project will aim to understand the underlying specificity and mechanism of the vaccination effect. Various specifically designed mouse strains will be used. NOTE: Please state in your application which position you are applying for. We are looking for an individual interested in developing highly innovative research projects on the TGF-beta type signaling in Drosophila development. The current research focus includes; 1) patterning and morphogenesis of wing veins regulated by BMP signaling, and 2) analysis of BMP morphogen gradient dynamics in the embryo. Our recent findings indicate that spatial distribution of BMP type ligand in Drosophila wing vein development is tightly regulated by a combination of long-range facilitated transport mechanism and short-range active retention mechanism. The prospective project is to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the mobility (long-range) and immobility (short-range) of signaling molecules are coordinated in the same tissue. Since the research projects include the fields of Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, imaging analysis and high throughput approach such as gene expression profile analysis, they offer an interdisciplinary environment for research training. Applicants are invited from candidates who have a background in developmental biology, genetics, and molecular biology. Further enquiries regarding the scope and details of the projects should be addressed to: osamu.shimmi@helsinki.fi or visit http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/shimmi/. The deadline for application is November 15, 2011.
