A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Eastern Finland, Institute of
Biomedicine, Kuopio Campus, to study the molecular basis of DNA replication in human
      cells.

The four-year position is funded by the Academy of Finland and it is available in the
group of Professor Juhani Syväoja. The group studies the interplay between replicative
DNA polymerases and other replication proteins during the cell cycle in cultivated human
cells.  Multiple methods of molecular and cell biology are applied, the main technique
being chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHIP). The focus of the group’s research is
currently expanding from specific replication initiation sites to a genome wide approach
with deep-sequencing methods included.  The research facilities are excellent and the
group has good and well-functioning international collaborative relationships. Applicants
should have a strong background in bench-level molecular and cell biology. Experience of
chromatin immunoprecipitation methods will be regarded as a merit and readiness for
co-supervision of PhD students is desirable.

A person to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher shall hold a suitable doctoral
degree. In an ideal case the four-year position starts on January 1st, 2012. Later dates
are possible, but would shorten the four-year period. The salary will be based on the
salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary is placed on level 5 (€2714.54).
The total salary is comprised of a job requirement component and a personal performance
component. The personal performance component can comprise a maximum of 46.3% of the job
      requirement component.

The written application containing 1) a cover letter indicating the applicant’s previous
achievements and motivation for this research, 2) the applicant’s CV with publications,
and 3) the contact information of two professional referees, including the applicant’s
current supervisor, should be sent to the registry office of the Joensuu or Kuopio

      2 post doctoral positions

Workplace: Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics
Form of employment: Fixed term employment with possibility to extension
      Scope: Full-time
Time period: Duties wish to be taken as soon as possible
Description of the work group/equivalent and its work/focus:

We invite applications for two post doctoral positions at our department.
One position in Redoxregulation of autoimmune inflammation and one position in
Immunespecific vaccination strategies using animal models.

Both positions will be placed at the Division of Medical Inflammation Research (see
      http://www.inflam.mbb.ki.se)
      Area of responsibilities/duties:

      1) Post doctoral position in Redoxregulation of autoimmune inflammation.

A post doctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong
background in experimental immunology and inflammation models. The project will focus on
the role of antigen-presenting cells regulating T cell immunity through oxidative burst
will be investigated. The Ncf1 gene has been positional cloned to be a major gene
regulating autoimmune arthritis and we have found the gene regulate both macrophage and T
cell reactivity. To sort out the underlying mechanisms operating in vivo we have made new
mouse strains conditionally expressing the Ncf1 gene. The project will use these strains
to study the role of Ncf1 in different antigen-presenting cells.

      2) Post doctoral position in Immunespecific vaccination strategies using animal models.

A post doctoral position is now open for a highly motivated scientist with a strong
background in cellular immunology and experimental animal work. The project will focus on
immune tolerance in experimental animal models. In the MIR lab we have developed new
strategies for therapeutic vaccination leading to protection against arthritis. It is
based on the discovery of critical posttranslationally modified peptides. The project
will aim to understand the underlying specificity and mechanism of the vaccination
effect. Various specifically designed mouse strains will be used.

NOTE: Please state in your application which position you are applying for.
Qualifications: To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree or a foreign
qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate in the field of medicine, biomedicine or
      biology.

Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to
take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification
from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the
      application.

Experience of research work in experimental animal of rodents, and in cellular immunology
is needed. The candidate must also have knowledge in statistics. Fluency in English is a
      requirement.

The positions are available for 2 years and have the possibility to be prolonged.Duties
wish to be taken as soon as possible.

      Research Scientist, Nonclinical Safety Assessment
      Orion Corporation, Orion Pharma, Espoo

The role of Nonclinical Safety Assessment, R&D, is to predict and ensure the safety of
new chemical entities during various phases of drug development. In discovery phase it is
important to exclude molecules with toxic properties when selecting drug candidates for
further development. We support the drug research and development at all Orion’s core
      therapy areas.

Your key responsibilities are to validate our new in vitro cytotoxicity assay and to
develop the result analyses of the assay. You will use an automated fluorescence
microscope to measure multiple cytotoxicity parameters (high content analysis). You will
validate the method by using reference compounds and develop data analyses with data
processing and visualization programs (e.g. Spotfire). In addition, you will find out and
resolve toxicity mechanism by using in vitro techniques.

The position is temporary (maternity leave) starting from 1.1.2012 and lasting about one
      year.

You have preferably PhD level degree in biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics or
related field, and you have several years’ expertise in research work. We expect that you
have deep experience in cell biology and in fluorescence microscopy and / or in analyzing
of large biological datasets. In addition, experience on image analyses, method
validation and multiparameter-HTS/HCS (high throughput / high content screening)
      –techniques are regarded beneficial.

We expect our research scientist to be able to work both independently and in
multidisciplinary research teams. You have strong IT-skills and are familiar to work with
data handling software. Innovation and consistency are the features you need, when you
develop and validate methods. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
      are a must.

We offer challenging and interesting position in drug research as a member of
      multi-disciplinary team in modern facilities.

Additional information on the position: Leena Sopanen, tel. 010 426 3632 (on 25th October
      or 27th October at 10.00-11.00).

PhD student position in developmental biology is available at the Institute of
      Biotechnology, University of Helsinki.

We are looking for an individual interested in developing highly innovative research
projects on the TGF-beta type signaling in Drosophila development. The current research
focus includes; 1) patterning and morphogenesis of wing veins regulated by BMP signaling,
and 2) analysis of BMP morphogen gradient dynamics in the embryo. Our recent findings
indicate that spatial distribution of BMP type ligand in Drosophila wing vein development
is tightly regulated by a combination of long-range facilitated transport mechanism and
      short-range active retention mechanism.

The prospective project is to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the mobility
(long-range) and immobility (short-range) of signaling molecules are coordinated in the
same tissue. Since the research projects include the fields of Drosophila genetics,
molecular biology, biochemistry, imaging analysis and high throughput approach such as
gene expression profile analysis, they offer an interdisciplinary environment for
      research training.

Applicants are invited from candidates who have a background in developmental biology,
genetics, and molecular biology. Further enquiries regarding the scope and details of the
projects should be addressed to: osamu.shimmi@helsinki.fi or visit
      http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/shimmi/.

The deadline for application is November 15, 2011.
