Position 11/04/2011-24/04/2011 04/24/2011
INFO1 We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral scientist interested in cell biology. The post offers the possibility to concentrate on one or two topics: either lysosome biology (especially the lysosomal membrane protein LAMP-2), or on autophagy (especially the early steps of autophagosome formation). The first alternative would require experience on cell biological/biochemical methods, while the latter alternative would suit better for a person with experience and interest in microscopical methods, including light and electron microscopy. Experience in recombinant DNA technology would be helpful in both topics. Our laboratory is located in the Department of Biosciences, University of Helsinki, at the Viikki campus. The campus houses several bioscience departments and research institutes and excellent core facilities for microscopy and other relevant techniques (http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/index.html). To apply, please send your CV and an application letter clearly describing your previous achievements in the field, to: eeva-liisa.eskelinen(at)helsinki.fi. IGBMC’s PhD Programme is based on a three year - intensive training which comprises dedicated research investigations and active participation in diverse lectures and practicals. Close collaborations with other research institutions in the “Parc d’Innovation” such as the adjacent MCI (Mouse Clinical Institute), the trinational biotechnology school ESBS (Ecole Supérieure de Biotechnologie Strasbourg ), the Faculty of Pharmacy as well as ISIS (Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires ) and the University of Strasbourg at large, contribute to synergistic and collegial interactions within and beyond IGBMC. Concomitantly with the highly cosmopolitan and dynamic nature of Strasbourg, our 280 students and post-doctoral fellows from over 30 distinct countries represent a key driving force of IGBMC international visibility. After the past success of the last three years, IGBMC is most pleased to announce the IGBMC International PhD Programme 2011-2012 call for students. Application deadline is April 30th 2011. More information may be found on the web site : http://www.igbmc.fr/formation/phd-program/index.html INFO 4 Postdoctoral fellow/PhD position in cancer biology A post-doctoral fellow/PhD position is available in the laboratory of Jukka Westermarck at the Centre for Biotechnology (CBT), University of Turku, Turku, Finland (http://www.btk.fi/research/research-groups/westermarck/). CIP2A is a novel clinically relevant human oncoprotein recently identified by our laboratory (Junttila, et al., Cell, 130, 2007). Current results clearly indicate that CIP2A might be a potential target protein for future cancer therapies. At the molecular level CIP2A functions as an inhibitor of an essential protein phosphatase complex PP2A, but the molecular mechanisms regulating CIP2A interaction with PP2A or PP2A complex assembly in cancer cells are very poorly understood. The aim of the project is to develop novel fluorescent reporters for studying PP2A complex assembly and CIP2A function. The future prospect of the work is to use these reporters for high-throughput screening of small molecule compounds regulating PP2A and CIP2A functions. The work will be done in collaboration with Dr. Daniel Abankwa´s laboratory (CBT, Turku), who is using cutting-edge cellular imaging (Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy, FLIM, and STED-nanoscopy), high-throughput methodological approaches (high-content and cytometer chemical- and RNAi-screening) to study cancer signaling. Position is available immediately and candidates will be considered until the positions are filled. Position is initially for two years with a possibility to extension depending on the progress of the project. Centre for Biotechology, University of Turku is a top-quality research center harbouring excellent core facilities for bioimaging, proteomics, genomics and crystallography. At the center works several research groups with distinguished publication profile in world leading journals (http://www.btk.fi/home/main/). Turku is a beautiful old city located in South-Western corner of Finland surrounded by a magnificient archipelago with thousands of small islands (http://www.saaristo.org/eng/). We are looking for hard-working and ambitious candidates with proven track record of successful scientific work. Solid previous experience on bioimaging and use of advanced microscopy techniques will be a clear asset. To apply, send to dabankwa@abo.fi, preferably as one merged pdf: your CV and an application letter clearly describing your previous achievements in the field and especially your experience on use of advanced microscopy techniques. Also include names and contact information of three references. Recent publications: Junttila et al.,: Cell, 130, 51–62, 2007. Wu et al.,: Nature Methods, 6, 75-77, 2009 Khanna et al.,: Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 101, 793-805, 2009. Abankwa et al.,: Embo J., 27, 727-735, 2008 Abankwa et al.,: PNAS, 107, 1130-1135, 2010. INFO 5 The Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki has positions open for 2 PhD students to work on projects studying how the flow of cellular information is altered in cancer. Particular focus will be put on using quantitative mass spectrometry to identify the molecular context in which cancer-linked proteins such as kinases, phosphatases, and transcription factors function. Interested and highly motivated students that are enthusiastic about the prospect of driving forefront research in an international environment are encouraged to apply. A strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology is an asset. Preliminary experience in cancer biology and/or proteomics would be advantageous, but not necessary. Good written and spoken English as well as the desire to work in a team-oriented environment are required. The Institute of Biotechnology (BI) at the University of Helsinki is an independent research institute located at the Viikki Campus, where it forms part of the largest national life sciences alliance in Finland. The Institute provides excellent facilities to conduct interdisciplinary research in biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition, close collaborations with other groups at the Institute, in Meilahti campus and research institutes abroad are in place. For further information about the open positions, please contact Group Leader Markku Varjosalo (markku.varjosalo@helsinki.fi). Applications are accepted until June 17, 2011.
